Mews partners with Hotels for Trees to help the hotel industry go green

[PRAGUE 7 OCTOBER 2021] – Mews, the leading cloud-based property management system (PMS), has partnered with Hotels for Trees, a new non-profit foundation dedicated to converting hotel stays into newly planted trees.

Hotels for Trees partners with hotels to encourage guests to forgo housekeeping. For each night that a guest skips cleaning the stay, a tree will be planted. Not only does this indirectly offsets part of the guest’s carbon footprint for their stay, it also saves on cleaning, water and chemical costs for the property and reinforces the importance of sustainability.

Sustainability is a key goal of our CSR program, and we are delighted to team up with Hotels for Trees,Said Matt Welle, CEO of Mews. “We were looking for projects that would have a tangible impact, and the clarity and simplicity of their concept really stood out. We hope to plant many trees in the years to come.

To celebrate the start of the partnership, Mews is funding the planting of 500 trees. The Mews product team is also working on the integration of Hotel for Trees into the various modules of its own reception platform. The current “offline” configuration using door hangers is already working very well in all hotels, but this integration will make it even easier for guests to participate and properties to administer internal processes. Until this is complete, Mews will donate an additional 100 trees each month.

It’s a win-win for customers, hoteliers and the environment,Said Floris Licht, Tree Planting Manager for Hotels for Trees. “Hotels will save an average of € 3 to € 5 each time a guest chooses to skip housekeeping during their stay. A 100-room hotel with 25% adaptation and 60% occupancy would allow the planting of more than 2,500 trees per year, while saving around € 10,000. By 2025, we aim to plant one million trees per year.

Although Hotels for Trees did not start until July of this year, they have already planted over 2,500 trees with adoption levels as high as 30% of all stays, demonstrating guest’s appetite for more sustainable trips. Hotels for Trees was founded in the Netherlands, but is currently expanding across Europe, where local and national (re) forestry projects from Trees for All partners are regularly added.

The current list of Hotels for Trees hotel partners includes Mews clients such as FINCH – boutique hotel, The Florian, The James, Le Marin Hotels Rotterdam and the two Skotel locations managed by Hotelschool The Hague. Beside that, WestCord Hotels, a partner of Mews and a renowned Dutch hotel chain with 15 hotels, will soon add its most sustainable hotel Jakarta Amsterdam to the program, where WestCord Hotels will also support the integration of Mews from a corporate perspective. hotel operation.

We are very excited to join this very simple, specific and transparent initiative which is fully in line with the sustainable way in which we manage our hotel,Said Nico Evers, General Manager of the Jakarta Amsterdam by Westcord Hotel. “Customers feel good knowing that they are having a positive impact, however small. It also means we can convert other rooms faster and save on energy, linen, water and chemicals costs.
