Project of the week: Hilton Hawassa

This time, the ‘Project of the Week’ award went to a luxury Hilton hotel heading to Hawassa, Ethiopia, on the shores of Lake Awassa near Amora Gedel National Park.

The five-star Hilton Hawassa will be located on a 563 m² estate in the Great Rift Valley.

Local know-how

Local Ethiopian company Sunshine Construction is developing the $42 million site, while fellow Ethiopian JDAW Consult has been hired as the architect, with HPM Dubai as the project management consultant.

The property will feature 169 rooms and villas, with an outdoor pool and spa complex serving as the centerpiece.

In addition to four dining options, including a specialty restaurant and poolside bar and grill; the property will include extensive meetings and events space, with over 1,000 m² of ballroom and pre-function space, as well as six other meeting rooms.

Jet lag

The hotel was first announced in 2015, with an initial completion year given as 2020. However, project delays have now seen this extended to the first quarter of 2024.

At the time, Patrick Fitzgibbon, Hilton Worldwide’s senior vice president of development for Europe and Africa, said, “With a strong heritage of hospitality in Ethiopia, Hilton Hawassa Resort & Spa will join Hilton Addis Ababa to provide world class service in this rapidly changing part of the country.

First Ethiopian position
