Wanted: “Barefoot Bookseller” to work at a luxury five-star hotel in the Maldives

Are you passionate about reading and looking to escape to a remote island in the Maldives for a year, where you can live and eat for free? This could be the perfect job for you.

Ultimate Library, a UK-based company, collaborated with Soneva Fushi, a five-star luxury resort, to open the first pop-up bookstore in the Maldives in 2018.

Now the library is looking for a new ‘barefoot bookseller’ to run the shop for 12 months, as well as run classes, workshops and lectures for hotel guests.

The lucky candidate will fly to the Maldives to join the Soneva Fushi team in early October this year, with accommodation and all meals free.

They will have access to a gym, spa and water sports like diving, with the staff also having their own private beach.

Skills required include a passion for reading and an in-depth knowledge of classic and modern literature, experience in book selling/publishing and a strong knowledge of social media.

They must also have the ability to integrate into the Soneva culture.

As reported by The Observer, the base salary is $750 per month, but the bookseller will be able to earn additional “service fees” by running workshops or classes related to the book.

Ultimate Library spokesman Alex McQueen said the “island ethos” is “no shoes, no news”.

Resort guests are encouraged to turn off their devices and “reconnect with the ground.”

Recent ‘barefoot bookseller’ Georgie Polhill told The Observer that one of the biggest challenges was getting used to the slow-paced life on the island.

“I came back a very different person. I learned an entirely new culture. I made friends that I will have for life,” she said.

Applications for the position close August 13.
